Sommos Chardonnay 2025 and Sommos Colección Syrah 2021 have both received awards in the latest edition of the VinoVarietal competition organised by Verema, the largest Spanish-speaking community of wine and gastronomy enthusiasts. The wines were awarded a Grand Gold Medal—the competition’s highest distinction—and a Gold Medal, respectively.
The 13th edition of the competition, held in Valencia on 2 July, recognises the quality of wines made predominantly from a single grape variety, which must account for at least 80% of the wine’s composition in accordance with current European regulations. The wines must also be covered by a Protected Designation of Origin, Geographical Indication or certified as varietal wines. The tasting is conducted entirely blind by an expert panel comprising sommeliers, winemakers, journalists, distributors and other specialists from the wine industry.
Sommos Chardonnay 2025 is an excellent example of the freshness we aim to express in our white wines. It is clean and expressive on the nose, with a distinctive varietal character. On the palate, it is flavourful, with a certain fullness, good acidity and a remarkably easy-drinking style. It is undoubtedly a fine example of what a noble grape variety such as Chardonnay can offer, with a profile that is ideal for the summer months,” explains José Javier Echandi, our winemaker.
Achieving this character begins with the work carried out in the vineyard at the Torresalas estate. Its north-facing orientation encourages the grapes to ripen slowly. They are grown in medium-to-high-vigour soils, which are sustainably balanced through the use of natural cover crops. After a brief four-hour maceration in the press and fermentation at a low temperature of between 14°C and 16°C, the wine appears in the glass with a bright pale-yellow colour and greenish highlights. This vintage offers remarkable aromatic complexity, with notes of tropical fruit and hints of citrus. On the palate, these are complemented by fruity flavours and a subtle yeasty background, evoking notes of butter and pastries.
Sommos Colección Syrah, meanwhile, is grown at the Montesa estate in deep, mineral-rich soils of medium fertility and is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Its aromas are dominated by ripe red fruit and wild berries, accompanied by floral notes and subtle spices. On the palate, it is fruity, with balanced acidity and a long, lingering finish.
