The British wine specialist website TimAtkin.com, led by the prestigious Master of Wine Tim Atkin, has awarded 93 points to two of our most distinctive wine proposals. These are Tiaso and Araia, two wines from the 2022 vintage that have received the highest score granted to D.O.P. Calatayud wines in this report, which brings together wines from all Spanish wine regions.
Both wines come from old Garnacha vines over 60 years old, grown in D.O.P. Calatayud vineyards located between 800 and 1,000 metres above sea level. These are very limited productions, with each bottle individually numbered. The main difference between the two wines lies in the fact that Tiaso 2022 comes exclusively from plots with slate soils and is aged for 14 months in clay vessels, while Araia 2022 is made from grapes grown in vineyards with clay soils and aged for 14 months in French oak vats.
Among other descriptions, the British critic defines Tiaso 2022 as “a Garnacha with finesse and personality, perfectly combining a rich, deep palate with the acidity typical of mountain vineyards, which speaks of the altitude from which the grapes come. A red wine with character.”
Regarding Araia 2022, he highlights its “aromas of wild herbs that point to its Calatayud origin, giving way to an intensely fruity palate supported by fresh, mineral acidity.” Structured and bold, it is a mountain Garnacha with impressive balance that will evolve favourably in the bottle.
In addition, the report, produced with the support of his regular collaborator Beth Willard, also highlights Sommos Colección Syrah, from the D.O.P. Somontano, awarding it 92 points. This makes it the highest-rated single-varietal Syrah in Aragón and one of the top three in Spain. Atkin describes this wine as “a very varietal Syrah, with intense notes of red fruit, spices, clove and aromatic herbs.” A northern Spanish profile with nods to the Rhône, offering very fresh acidity, fine tannins and pleasant evolution over time. Rich and satisfying.
For the entire Bodega Sommos and Sommos Garnacha team, these scores are a recognition of the work carried out in the vineyard and in the winery, and of our commitment to wines with identity, precision and character.
