Sommos Colección Gewürztraminer 2025 has been awarded a Gold Medal at the 40th edition of the Bacchus Awards, one of the leading competitions for young wines in Spain, organized by the Unión Española de Catadores.
This recognition is especially significant as it is a competition in which more than 50 professionals blind-taste wines produced in the latest vintage. This year, the Bacchus Awards brought together some of the best wines from the 2025 harvest, placing our Gewürztraminer among the most outstanding wines in the competition.
For us, this award is a great source of pride because it reflects the work carried out both in the vineyard and in the winery to continue exploring the full potential of this grape variety in the Somontano region.
Sommos Colección Gewürztraminer was the first white wine in our Colección range, a selection of single-varietal wines from unique plots within the Somontano PDO. We craft this wine with grapes from our Finca Torresalas estate, which surrounds the winery. This plot is distinguished by its calcareous, gypsum, and saline soils, formed from ancient alluvial deposits of the Cinca River.
The north-south orientation of this vineyard allows us to obtain complementary profiles within the same plot. While the grapes facing east retain greater freshness and citrus notes, those on the west side develop more tropical and intense nuances. The result is a complex, balanced wine with a very defined personality.
Gewürztraminer is also the grape variety with which we begin the harvest each year. The 2025 harvest began in the early morning, taking advantage of the cooler nighttime temperatures to preserve its natural acidity and maintain moderate sugar levels, thus aiming for a more gastronomic profile. Subsequently, fermentation was carried out using native yeasts, respecting the vineyard’s and vintage’s identity as much as possible.
According to our winemaker, José Javier Echandi, this vintage represents the most complete expression we have achieved to date. The result is an aromatic and expressive wine on the nose, yet dry on the palate, with vibrant acidity, a marked saline character, and a slightly bitter finish that lends depth and great gastronomic versatility.
This Gold Medal is an accolade that encourages us to continue working with the same passion and dedication to craft wines that reflect the character and uniqueness of each plot.
